టెన్నిస్ చరిత్రలోనే అతి గొప్ప పోరాటం- అయిదు గంటల, యాభై అయిదు నిముషాలు అభిమానులని వెర్రెత్తించిన ఫైనల్- సెర్బియాకి చెందిన నోవాక్ జోకోవిచ్ కీ స్పెయిన్ కిన్ చెందిన రాఫెల్ నడాల్ కీ మధ్యన ఆదివారం రాత్రి మెల్బోర్న్లో రాడ్-లేవర్ ఎరీనా లో జరిగింది.

సాధారణంగా జనవరి నెలలో ఆస్ట్రేలియాలో ఎండా వేడీ భరించలేనంతగా వుంటాయి. ఉదయం ఆరు గంటలకే ముప్ఫయి అయిదు డిగ్రీల సెల్సియస్ చేరుకునే ఉష్ణోగ్రత దాదాపు రాత్రి పదింటి వరకూ అక్కడే వుంటుంది. గాలిలో తేమ చాలా తక్కువ వుండటం వల్ల డీహైడ్రేషనూ, కళ్ళ మంటలూ, తలనొప్పీ వగైరాలు రావటం ఖాయం.

అలాటి చిరాకెత్తించే  పరిస్థితిలో మనసులని ఉల్లాస పరచే ఏకైక సాధనం – ఆస్ట్రేలియన్ ఓపెన్ టెన్నిస్! కిందటి ఆదివారం మగవాళ్ళ ఫైనల్స్ జరిగాయి. అసలే ఈ సారి క్రికెట్లో ఇండియా జట్టు ఆస్ట్రేలియా జట్టు చేతిలో ఒళ్ళు హూనం చేయించుకుంటుందేమో, మా అందరినీ కదిలిస్తే ఏడ్చే లాగున్నాము. ఆఖరికి మొన్న మా ఆఫీసులో ఏదో మీటింగులో, నా కొలీగ్ , ఇంకొకరితో, “పాపం ఆవిడని యేదీ అడగకండి. అసలే  వాళ్ళు దెబ్బలు తిని వున్నారు,” అన్నాడు. అందరం గొల్లుమన్నాం!

అందుకే క్రికెట్టు బారినించి తప్పిచుకోవటానికి ఈ సారి టెన్నిస్ ఎప్పటికంటే ఉత్సాహంగా చూసామేమో. అందరూ అనుకున్నట్టుగానే జొకోవిచ్ ఫైనల్ పోటీలో నెగ్గాడు. కానీ, ఏం ఆట అది? చూడటానికి రెండు కళ్ళూ చాలలేదు.  ఈ పోటీల్లో ఈ సారి నాకు అన్నిటికంటే నచ్చినవి-

1) క్వార్టర్ ఫైనల్స్ లో ఆస్ట్రేలియన్ బుడతడు టామిచ్ ఫెడరర్ తో తలపడిన తీరు

2) సెమీ ఫైనల్స్ లో ఫెడరర్ కీ నడాల్ కీ నడుమ భీకరమైన పోరు,

3)ఇంకో సెమీ ఫైనల్ లో జొకోవిచ్ జోరు,

4)ఆఖరికి జొకోవిచ్-నడాల్, అయ్యారే!

చూసిన అన్ని ఆటలూ ఒక్కసారి కూడా “పనీ పాటా లేకుండా టీవీ ముంది టైం వేస్టు చేస్తున్నామే” అన్న బాధ తెలియనీయలేదు.

ఎటూ ఫెడరర్, నడాల్, జొకోవిచ్, మర్రే మొదలైన వాళ్ళే నెగ్గుతారని ఈ పోటీలో చిన్నా చితకా  ఆటలు పెద్దగా చూడ టానికేం వుండదు. ఎలిమినేషన్ జరిగి, దిగ్గజాలు మిగిలిన తర్వాతే ఆట రసపట్టులోకి వస్తుంది.

క్వార్టర్ ఫైనల్-

ఆరడుగుల అయిదంగుళాల అందగాడు, పంతొమ్మిదేళ్ళ బెర్నార్డ్ టామిచ్. క్వీన్స్లేండ్ లో నివసించే ఇతను జూనియర్ లెవెల్ లో గ్రేండ్ స్లాం పోటీల్లో చాలా సార్లు ఆడి వున్నాడు. 2011 లో వింబుల్డన్ క్వార్టర్ ఫైనల్ లో జొకోవిచ్ చేతిలో ఓడిపోయాడు. ఈ చిచ్చర పిడుగు  2012 ఆస్ట్రేలియన్ ఓపెన్ టెన్నిస్ క్వార్టర్ ఫైనల్ లో ఫెడరర్ ని జంకూ గొంకూ లేకుండా డీకొన్నాడు. స్ట్రెయిట్ సెట్స్ లో ఓడిపోయినా (6-4, 6-2, 6-2), గట్టి పోటినే ఇచ్చాడు.  నిస్సందేహంగా టామిచ్ కంటే ఫెడరర్ అన్ని రకాలుగా గొప్ప ఆటగాడు. ఆ సంగతి తెలిసినా, ఓటమి తప్పదని తెలిసినా, టామిచ్ వెనక్కి తగ్గకుండా నిల దొక్కుకుని ఆడటం నించి మన క్రికెట్ టీం కొంచెం నేర్చుకోవచ్చు కదా అనిపించటంలో ఆశ్చర్యం ఏముంది?
ఆట ముగిసిన తర్వాత ఫెడరర్ “బెర్నార్డ్ కి చాలా మంచి భవిష్యత్తు వుంది. అతని కింకా పంతొమ్మిదేళ్ళే! ఈ ఆట నెగ్గటానికి నేనెంతో కష్ట పడవలసి వచ్చింది. దానితోనే తెలుస్తుంది అతనికి మంచి భవిష్యత్తుందని”  అన్నాడు. (అన్నట్లు టామిచ్ ఆ తర్వాత గోల్డ్-కోస్ట్ లో ఒక చిన్న ట్రాఫిల్ వివాదంలో చిక్కుకున్నాడని చదివినప్పుడు నవ్వొచ్చింది. ఫెడరర్ అన్నట్టు, “అతనికింకా పంతొమ్మిదేళ్ళే!”)

క్లాష్ ఆఫ్ టైటన్స్

టెన్నిస్ పోటీలో అందరూ ఉవ్విళ్ళూరుతూ ఎదురు చూసే సందర్భం- ఫెడరర్- నడాల్ పోటీ గురువారం జనవరి ఇరవై ఆరున జరిగింది. ఆ రోజు ఆస్ట్రేలియా డే సందర్భంగా సెలవు కూడా! సాయంత్రం పావు తక్కువ ఏడింటికే టీవీ ముందు సెటిలైపోయరందరూ!

నిజం చెప్పాలంటే ఈ మేచ్ ఎందుకో ఫెడరర్ కొంచెం కళా విహీనంగా ఆడాడనిపించింది. మొదటి సెట్ నెగ్గింతర్వాత, ఫెడరర్ జోరు కొంచెం తగ్గితే మాడ్పు మొహంతో నడాల్ రెచ్చిపోయాడు. మొదట్లో నడాల్ కొంచెం రెస్ట్ లెస్ గా చిరాగ్గా అనిపిస్తే ఫెడరర్ కూల్ గా ఆడి 6-7 తో నెగ్గాడు. కానీ తర్వాత నడాల్ నిలదొక్కుకొని 6-2, 7-6, 6-4 స్కోరు తో గెలిచాడు.

ఫెడరర్- నడాల్ ఇద్దరిలో ఎవరు గొప్ప అన్న ప్రశ్న తేలేది కాదు, ఈ విషయం మీద వాళ్ళిద్దరి అభిమానులూ ఎంత గొంతులు చించుకున్నా. ఇద్దరి రికార్డులు చూసినా ఈ సంగతి తేలదు. పదహారు గ్రాండ్ స్లాం టైటిల్స్ ఫెడరర్ కుంటే నాడాల్ కి తొమ్మిదే వున్నాయి. కానీ వాళ్ళిద్దరు తలపడ్డప్పుడు మాత్రం విజయం ఎక్కువగా నడాల్ నే వరించింది. అందుకే “అద్దె లేకుండా ఫెడరర్ మనసులో వుంటాడు నడాల్” అని వర్ణించిందొక ఆస్ట్రేలియన్ దిన పత్రిక. ఇద్దరూ పోటా పోటీగా ఆడుతుంటే చూడటం మాత్రం బలే థ్రిల్లింగయిన అనుభవం.

జోకొవిచ్ జోరు

రెండో సెమీ-ఫైనల్ లో తలపడిన జోకోవిచ్ మర్రే లిద్దరూ టెన్నిస్ కోర్టు బయట మంచి స్నేహితులు. ఇద్దరి వయసులూ దాదాపు ఒకటే. నోవక్ కోర్టు బయట జోకులేస్తూ, మిగతా ఆటగాళ్ళని అనుకరిస్తూ కూల్ గా అనిపిస్తాడు కానీ, కోర్టులో పదునైన చూపులతో ప్రత్యర్ధిని హడలెక్కిస్తాడు. మర్రే కోర్టు బయటా, లోపలా కొంచెం సీరియస్ గానే వుంటాడు. మొన్నటి సెమీ-ఫైనల్స్ లో ఇద్దరూ “పేకాట పేకాటే, తమ్ముడు తమ్ముడే ” అన్న పధ్ధతిలో ఆడారు. మర్రే ఎంత పట్టుదలగా ఆడినా, నోవాక్ ప్రతిభా, పట్టుదలల ముందు తల వొంచక తప్పలేదు. 4-6, 2-6, 3-6 (మర్రే-జోకొవిచ్) స్కోరు తో మర్రే ఓడిపోయాడు. ఈ ఆటలో పోరాటం కంటే జోకోవిచ్ బాడీ-లాంగ్వేజీ, పదునైన చూపులూ, మొత్తంగా డామినేటింగ్ గేమూ చాలా నచ్చాయి నాకు.

 ఆఖరి పోరాటం

టెన్నిస్ చరిత్రలోనే అతి గొప్ప పోరాటం- అయిదు గంటల, యాభై అయిదు నిముషాలు అభిమానులని వెర్రెత్తించిన ఫైనల్- సెర్బియాకి చెందిన నోవాక్ జోకోవిచ్ కీ స్పెయిన్ కిన్ చెందిన రాఫెల్ నడాల్ కీ మధ్యన ఆదివారం రాత్రి మెల్బోర్న్లో రాడ్-లేవర్ ఎరీనా లో జరిగింది. అది ఆట కాదు. ప్రాణాలకు తెగించి ఇద్దరు యోధులు చేసే యుధ్ధం. ఒకరికొకరు తీసిపోకుండా వాళ్ళ పట్టుదలా, పటిమా, వర్ణించ శక్యం కాదు.

మొదటి సెట్లో ఓడిపోయి (5-7) , రెండు మూడో సెట్లలో నోవాక్ నెగ్గగానే (6-4, 6-2) , నడాల్ తగ్గిపోతున్నాడా అనిపించింది కానీ ఆ తర్వాత అతను విజృంభించిన తీరు అమోఘం. 5-7, 6-4, 6-2, 6-7, 7-5 (నోవాక్-రాఫా) స్కోరుతో రాఫా ఓడిపోయినా, అతనూ గెలిచాడనిపించింది, చివరిదాకా అతని ఫైటింగ్ స్పిరిట్ చూస్తే.

మేచ్ ముగిసి ఇద్దరూ నిలబడలేని పరిస్థితిలో వుంటే ప్రెజెంటేషన్ సెరిమోనీ లో వాళ్ళకి కుర్చీలు వేసారు. ఓటమిని మొహం మీద ఏమాత్రం కనబడనీయకుండా నాడల్ “గుడ్ మార్నింగ్” అని అందరినీ పలకరించాడు. అప్పటికి సమయం ఒంటి గంటైంది. జోకొవిచ్ మాట్లాడుతూ, “రాఫా! నువ్వు చాలా గొప్ప ఆటగాడివి. టెన్నిస్ ఆటలో ఎంతో గౌరవం సంపాదించుకున్న క్రీడాకారుడివి. ఈ రాత్రి మనిద్దరం  చరిత్ర సృష్టించాం. దురదృష్టవశాత్తూ, విజయం ఒక్కరికే లభిస్తుంది,” అన్నాడు.

టెన్నిస్ ఆటా, దాన్లో వుండే టెక్నిక్కూ, ప్రావీణ్యతా, సీ-సా లాగా వూగే మేచీ చూడటం ఒక మంచి అనుభవమైతే, వాళ్ళలోని స్పోర్టివ్ స్పిరిట్ నీ, చివరివరకూ వదలకుండా ప్రయత్నిస్తూనే వుండే పట్టుదలనీ చూసి ఎన్నో నేర్చుకోవచ్చు. నేనైతే వాటికోసమే చూస్తా, నిజానికి.

ఇది రాస్తుండగా మళ్ళీ ఇండియా క్రికెట్ టీము ఆస్ట్రేలియా చేతిలో ట్వెంటీ-ట్వెంటీ మేచ్ లో ఘోర పరాజయం పాలైంది. అన్నట్టు, ఆ మేచిలో ఫీల్డింగ్ బాగా చేసి ఆస్ట్రేలియా జట్టుని నూట డెభ్భై పరుగులకే ఆల్-అవుట్ చేసారు. ఇవాళ పొద్దున ఒక స్నేహితుడు నాతో ఆనందంగా అన్నాడు, “ఇక మనకి ఫీల్డింగ్ బాగా వచ్చేసినట్టే. ఒక్క బేటింగ్, బవులింగ్ నేర్చుకుంటే చాలు!” అని.

డిసెంబరు నెలలో మొదలు పెట్టి దాదాపు నాలుగు వారాలు అమెరికా అంతా చుట్టి రెండు వారాల క్రితం అడిలైడ్ తిరిగొచ్చాము.

ఇటు చివర స్టాన్ ఫోర్డ్ విశ్వ విద్యాలయం నించి మొదలు పెట్టి అటు చివర హెన్రీ ఫోర్డ్ మ్యూజియం వరకూ ఎన్నెన్నో వింతలూ విశేషాలూ చూసాము! అన్నిటినీ మించి అద్బుతంగా మంచు కురుస్తుంటే ఇంట్లో వెచ్చగా కూర్చుని చూస్తూ “అబ్బ, ఎంత బాగుంది” అనుకున్నాము. తల్లి తండ్రులనీ, తోబుట్టువలనీ బంధువులనీ పలకరించి చెమర్చిన కళ్ళతో తిరిగొచ్చాము.

అక్కడ చూసిన కొన్ని వింతలు విశేషాలు…

అ) స్టాన్ఫోర్డ్ విశ్వ విద్యాలయం

” చదివితే ఇలాటి చోట చదవాలి” అనిపించింది స్టాన్ఫొర్డ్ చూస్తే! “ది ఫార్మ్” అని విద్యార్థులందరూ ముద్దుగా పిలుచుకునే స్టాన్ఫోర్డ్ విశ్వ విద్యాలయం లేలాండ్, జేన్ స్టాన్ఫోర్డ్ దంపతులు మరణించిన వారి పదిహేనేళ్ళ కుమారుని గుర్తుగా స్థాపించారని ప్రతీతి. 1878 లో స్థాపిస్తే 1891 నించి విద్యార్థులకొరకు తలుపులు తెరచారు. అప్పట్లో ఆడా-మగా కలిసి చదుకునే కో-ఎడ్యుకేషన్ వ్యవస్థ ఇదొక్కటేనట! శాన్ ఫ్రాన్సిస్కో కీ శాన్ యోసే కీ మధ్యన సిలికాన్ వేలీలో పాల్-ఆల్టో లో వుందీ యూనివర్సిటీ. దాదాపు పదిహేడు మంది నోబెల్ గ్రహీతలనందించిది ప్రపంచానికి. అజీజ్ ప్రేంజీ, విక్రం సేథ్, రే డాల్బీ, హర్బర్ట్ హూవర్, జాన్ మెకెన్రో, టైగర్ వుడ్స్ వంటి వారు ఈ తరగతి గదులనించే వచ్చారు.

ఆ) గోల్డెన్ గేట్ బ్రిడ్జి

శాన్ ఫ్రాన్సిస్కో నగరానికి తలమానికంగా అనిపించే గోల్డెన్ గేట్ బ్రిడ్జి శాన్ ఫ్రాన్సిస్కో నగరాన్ని మారిన్ కౌంటీ తో కలిపే సస్పెన్షన్ బ్రిడ్జి. జోసెఫ్ స్ట్రాస్ అనే ఇంజినీరు డిజైన్ చేసిన ఈ బ్రిడ్జి 1933 లో మొదలు పెట్టి 1937 లో పూర్తి చేసారు. 1964 వరకూ ఇదే ప్రపంచంలోకెల్లా అతి పొడవైన సస్పెన్షన్ బ్రిడ్జి గా వుండేదట. అన్ని రకాల వాతావరణాల్లో దూరం వరకూ కనిపించేలాగుండాలని ఈ వంతెనని కొంచెం ఎరుపు రంగు (కాషాయం రంగు) లో నిర్మించారట. అద్భుతమైన సాంకేతిక పరిఙ్ఞానానికే కాదు, ఈ వంతెన ఆత్మ హత్యలకి కూడా ప్రసిధ్ధి చెందిందంటారు. ఇంతవరకూ ఈ వంతెనని మూడు సార్లు మూసివేసారు. అయితే శాంఫ్రాన్సిస్కో భూమి ఉపరితలం మీద వుండే ఫాల్ట్ లైనె కి దగ్గరగా వుంది. అందు వల్ల భూకంపాల సంభావ్యత ఎక్కువ.ఇంతవరకూ ఈ వంతెన భూకంపాలని తట్టుకోగలదని అనుకున్నారు కానీ ఇప్పుడు దీని స్ట్రక్చరల్ స్ట్రెంత్ ని మెరుగు పరచటానికి ఏర్పాట్లు జరుగుతున్నట్టుంది. సాయంత్రం చలి చలి గా వున్నా బ్రిడ్జి మీద బోల్డు జనం!

ఇ)మ్యూర్ వుడ్స్

శాన్ ఫ్రాన్సిస్కోలో మేము చూసిన ఇంకొక అందమైన ప్రదేశం మ్యూర్ వుడ్స్. సంవత్సరం పొడుగూతా చల్లగా తడి తడిగా వుండే ఈ అడివిలో ప్రాచీనమైన రెడ్ వుడ్ చెట్లు దట్టంగా వుంటాయి. నిజానికి ఇది ఒక పర్యావరణ ఔత్సాహికుడు ఈ అడివినంతా కొని దేశానికి ధారాదత్తం చేసాడట. ప్రభుత్వం పేదవాళ్ళకివ్వదల్చిన స్థలాన్ని కబ్జాదారులు ఆక్రమించుకుని షాపింగ్ మాళ్ళూ, అపార్ట్మెంట్ బిల్డింగులూ కడుతున్న ఈ రోజుల్లో ఇది వినటానికే ఆశ్చర్యంగా అనిపించింది నాకు! దాదాపు ఆరువందల ఎకరాల అడివిని కొన్న విలియం కెంట్, ఎలిజబెత్ కెంట్ తీరా ఈ స్థలానికి తమ పేరు పెట్టటానికి ఒప్పుకోలేదట. తమ స్నేహితుడూ, పర్యావరాణలో ఎంతో ఆసక్తి వున్నవాడు అయిన జాన్ మ్యూర్ పేరు పెట్టాలని సూచించారు. అందుకే ఇది మ్యూర్ వుడ నేషనల్ పార్క్ అయింది.

ఈ రెడ్ వుడ్ చెట్లు దాదాపు మూడు వందల యాభై అడుగుల ఎత్తు వరకూ ఎదుగుతాయి. ఈ పార్కులో అన్నిటికన్నా పొడవైన వృక్షం ఎత్తు రెండువందల యాభై ఎనిమిది అడుగులు. సూర్య కాంతి జల్లెడలోంచి పడుతున్నట్టు సన్నగా పడుతుండటంతో మిగతా చిన్నా చితకా చెట్లు మెడలు సాచి సూర్య కాంతి వచ్చే దిశగా పెరుగుతాయి. అందువల్ల తిన్నగా పెరగక వంకర టింకరగా పెరుగుతాయి. ఒక రకమైన మేపుల్ చెట్టయితే ఏకంగా పెద్ద పెద్ద ఆకులతో వీలైనంత సూర్యకాంతిని జుర్రుకుంటుంది. ఎటు చూసినా పచ్చదనం, రంగురంగుల పక్షులూ, చల్లదనం, ఈ అడివంతా ఒక అడ్బుతం! ఇక్కడ వున్న చెట్లన్నిటిలోకీ పురాతనమైనరెడ్ వుడ్ వృక్షం వయసు దాదాపు పన్నెండు వందల సంవత్సరాలు.

మూడు రోజులు శాన్ ఫ్రాన్సిస్కో లో గడిపి అట్నించి లాస్ ఏంజెల్స్ నగరానికి ప్రయాణం. దాన్ని గురించి ఇంకో టపాలో….

Pratap Kishore – Founder and torch bearer of Telangana Praja Samiti

Pratap Kishore, the founder of the Telangana Praja Samiti, and the first person to speak for a separate state was born on October 9, 1933 in Hyderabad, Telangana, to Chandravati and Hind Kishore, an aristocrat of Hyderabad.

Pratap Kishore studied in Grammar School up to class 8, after which he shifted to Madras-e-Alia, now Alia College. He completed his matriculation from Alia and joined the Nizam College from where he studied for both his intermediate and Bachelor of Arts degree. After graduation Pratap Kishore entered the portals of Osmania University to study for a Diploma in Journalism. On completing Journalism course, Pratap Kishore joined the Indian Express as an intern. Later in the early 60’s he joined the Deccan Chronicle as a reporter. And went to become the Special Correspondent for the paper in New Delhi. As a reporter Pratap travelled across the state and was moved by the plight of the Telangana people and the slow domination of the Andhra’s which was beginning to show.

Pratap Kishore’s fight for a separate Telangana State started in 1956, when the state of Andhra Pradesh was formed by merging the Hyderabad state and the Andhra state against the recommendations of the Fazal Ali Commission popularly known as the SRC commission, and the will of the Telangana people. He had the foresight to see the systematic degeneration the region will be forced into if it was merged with the state of Andhra.

In 1969, Pratap Kishore along with Keshava Rao and other Telangana leaders formed the TPS, “Telangana Praja Samiti”. The TPS spear headed the agitation for a separate Telangana in 1969, in which over 360 students were shot dead. The founders of the TPS like Pratap Kishore were all employed in private service and hence could not take up the party positions. And the leadership was passed on to Chenna Reddy and Madan Mohan.

Pratap Kishore, the man behind the 1969 agitation had to go underground to evade arrest and detention by the Andhra police but was arrested in November of 1969, and detained in Musheerabad jail. While in the jail Pratap Kishore organized a meeting of jailed Telangana fighters and the minutes and resolution passed in this meeting within the jail were smuggled out and reported in the national media, needless to say it created a furore within the state and national government. Seeing the condition in which the students were being held in the Jail, Pratap Kishore led a hunger strike with the result that the students were treated as political prisoners and not like common criminals as was then happening.

Pratap Kishore, a staunch separatist spent the years from 1980 to 2004 in carrying out his crusade for a separate state of Telangana and kept the cause alive during the bleak 1980’s and 90’s when no one dared speak of a separate state. He revived the Telangana Praja Samiti in 1984 and held Telangana conventions in Hyderabad, Warangal and Mahbubnagar as well as mohallah meetings across Hyderabad. In June 1987, Pratap Kishore lead a 5 member TPS team on a padayatra from the Charminar in Hyderabad to Delhi, to highlight the cause of Telangana. In 1985 the TPS as a protest against the unhygienic living conditions in the city and the apathy of the Government, presented a kilo of garbage collected from the overflowing and uncleared garbage dumps in the city to Mr. NT Rama Rao, the CM of Andhra Pradesh. The direct fallout of this was the holding of the Municipal Council elections in 1986.

From 1985 to 2003 Pratap Kishore led the TPS in a dawn to dusk fast every November 1, at the Telangana Martyrs’ Memorial in Basheerbagh, as a mark of respect for the martyrs who laid down their lives in 1969, fighting for a separate state. This in spite of the fact that from 1996 he was a cardiac patient and was on medical support. As General Secretary of TPS, Pratap Kishore published a large number of status reports on the lack of development and the injustice done to Telangana and tried to build Governmental consensus for a Separate Statehood. In 2000 at an open house organized by the State Electricity Board and the World Bank, which had granted a loan of Rs 4,200 crore to the ASPSEB, Pratap Kishore spoke against the APSEB’s practice of billing the consumers bi-monthly and charging an interest on the previous months consumption. He stated that this was hurting the middle class citizens especially those living on their pensions. Wherein instead of making one small payment each month they were being forced to make one big payment for two months plus interest and taxes. This he said was breaking the finances and the back bone of the retired senior citizens making their ends meet on their pensions. This speech of his received a standing ovation and the World Bank took up the issue with the result that APSEB today sends out monthly bills.

In fact, most of the works published by him “Towards Telangana State” “How to achieve Telangana” spoke about the ways of protest we today talk about like boycotting Andhra products and traders, not letting out homes to Andhra’s, support and preference for Telangana people while selecting them for jobs. Pratap Kishore a journalist, a writer he wrote over 100 short stories, Urdu couplets and a die hard Telangana separatist breathed his last on January 29, 2004 surrounded by his family. As per his wishes, his ashes were immersed in the Sangam of the Isa and Musa rivers in Hyderabad, as he wanted his ashes to be mingled with the soil of Telangana.

Pratap Kishore was wont to say, “I may die but will never be dead until Telangana is formed. And it is a belief of all those who were touched by him, that his soul will rest in eternal peace only when Telangana state is formed.

Jagan cosying up to TRS, may threaten Congress

HYDERABAD – What had been a mere speculation in the political circles in the past few months is coming true. The Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS), which had violently opposed YSR Congress party President Y S Jaganmohan Reddy’s tour of Telangana last year, is now gearing up to welcome him in mid-January when he is expected to undertake a tour of the region.

This politically-strategic move, political observers believe, is the first step towards establishing an electoral tie-up between the two parties ahead of the 2014 elections. An alliance between TRS and YSR Congress could prove to be a lethal combination since it is widely believed that Jagan had eroded the political bases of both the Congress and Telugu Desam Party (TDP) in coastal Andhra and Rayalaseema regions while TRS, being a party fighting for the separate Telangana statehood cause, would expectedly do well in the region. TRS leaders argue that they had not opposed the ongoing trip of TDP President N Chandrababu Naidu in Telangana in deference to the democratic spirit. Hence, there is no reason why the party should oppose Jagan’s tour either, they contend. The fact is that the separatist party would be seen in poor light if they oppose Naidu’s tour and then remain silent when Jagan undertakes his tour.

TRS Floor Leader in the Legislative Assembly E Rajender justified his party’s decision stating that it had decided to respect the democratic spirit as far as the other parties are concerned. “We are in a democratic polity and every party has the right to carry out its programmes, and hence, TRS has not given any call to oppose Naidu’s tours in Telangana,” he said.

Interestingly, TRS does not view Jagan as an enemy now despite the fact that the Kadapa MP had displayed a placard in Lok Sabha advocating united Andhra. It is also a known fact that Jagan does have a fair share of supporters in Telangana region too, particularly the youth.

Meanwhile, Naidu said his party would ensure that the farmers in the state get a profit of 50 per cent on their produce if his party comes to power. All the promises that the TDP makes to farmers would be included in the party manifesto, he said.

Addressing farmers in adjoining Medak district, the former chief minister accused the Congress government of neglecting the farm sector and alleged that the state government had failed to come to their rescue despite declaring over 800 mandals as drought-hit. Asking the government if they were blind to the problems faced by farmers, Naidu wondered if the ministers were in slumber. “Can’t they see problems faced by farmers? Crops have dried, farmers are unable to get remunerative prices for their produce and they are in dire straits,” he said.
